Home EV Charger Installations: What It Costs, What to Expect, and How to Do It Right

We've installed over 600 EV chargers across Long Island, New York City, and now Pensacola, Florida. If there's one thing we've learned, it's that homeowners come to us with the same set of questions every time. So rather than a generic article about why EVs are good for the environment, here's the real, practical information you actually need before scheduling your installation.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 — Which One Do You Actually Need?

Your EV came with a Level 1 charger — the cord that plugs into a standard 120V outlet. It works, but it adds roughly 4–5 miles of range per hour. If you drive more than 40 miles a day or simply don't want to think about whether your car is charged, Level 1 isn't enough.

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240V circuit (the same as a dryer or range) and adds 20–30 miles of range per hour depending on the charger and your vehicle. Most homeowners charging overnight will wake up to a fully charged car every single morning, regardless of how much they drove the day before. For the vast majority of EV owners, Level 2 is the right answer.

What Brands Do We Install?

We install all major Level 2 home charger brands, including Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint HomeFlex, Ford, Emporia, and Autel. If you have a Tesla, the Wall Connector is the cleanest solution — it integrates natively with your car's app and charges at the highest rate your Tesla supports. If you have a non-Tesla EV or want flexibility for future vehicles, we recommend a universal J1772/NACS charger. We'll make a specific recommendation based on your vehicle, your electrical panel, and your usage during your free site assessment.

Does Your Panel Need an Upgrade?

This is the question most homeowners don't think to ask until we get to their house. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V circuit, typically a 60-amp breaker. If your panel is already at capacity — which is common in older Long Island homes — you may need a panel upgrade before the charger can be installed.

We assess your panel during every quote at no charge. About 30–40% of the homes we visit on Long Island need either a panel upgrade or a load management solution. We handle all of it, including all permits.

What Does It Actually Cost?

A straightforward Level 2 installation in a home with adequate panel capacity typically runs $800–$1,500 for labor and materials, plus the charger itself ($400–$800 depending on brand). If a panel upgrade is needed, add $2,500–$5,000 depending on the scope. PSEG Long Island customers may be eligible for a rebate through PSEG's EV Make-Ready program. Con Edison customers in NYC and Westchester may qualify for incentives through separate programs. We guide you through every available incentive as part of the quoting process.

Bi-Directional Charging: The Next Level

If you own a Ford F-150 Lightning, a Cybertruck, or certain other vehicles with vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability, your EV can actually power your house during an outage. This requires a specific bidirectional charger and a transfer switch — it's more complex than a standard L2 install, but the result is essentially a backup generator on wheels. We are one of the few contractors on Long Island with hands-on experience installing bidirectional systems, including Tesla Powershare, Ford Intelligent Backup, and GM Powershift. If you have a V2H-capable vehicle and want to know your options, call us directly. This is a niche we've invested real time in.

What to Expect on Installation Day

Most home EV charger installations take 3–6 hours. We pull the permit beforehand, install the dedicated circuit and charger, and coordinate the inspection. We handle the paperwork. By the end of the day, your charger is on the wall, tested, and ready to use.

We serve Nassau County, Suffolk County, all five NYC boroughs, Westchester, and the Pensacola, FL area.
